Robert Herald Brumley, age 75, of Afton, passed away Monday evening, April 8, 2019 at Greeneville Community Hospital East. He was better known as “Bob” to his family and friends. Bob was the first born child of the late Ralph and Virginia Brumley. He joined the Navy at age 17 and was stationed in various states in the U.S. as well as in Japan. He served aboard the USS Lexington. Bob was an airplane mechanic and said that it was amazing seeing the action that took place as the planes came in and took off. After he was honorably discharged from the Navy, he settled in Virginia and always called Virginia home, even after his retirement to Afton. In his earlier years he loved to travel and ride his Harley Davidson cycles. He loved a good ride as long as his health permitted.Mr. Brumley is survived by his daughter, Catherine Brumley of Falls Church, VA; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Betty and Rudy Brown, Brenda Cobble, and Sandra Ellenburg; special aunt, Dorothy Ayers, whom he thought of as his second mother; the mother of his daughter, Lesley Beardow; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and his life-long friends, Dick Davis of Colonia Beach, VA, Billy Fletcher of Fredericksburg, VA, Brian Florence of Daytona Beach, FL, Buzz West of Ft. Myers, FL, Pete Boyd of Ashburn, VA, John Harley of Springfield, VA, Calvin Thayer of Manasses, VA, Gary and Pat Ralston of Colonial Beach, VA and Rocky and Melinda Emery of Alexandria, VA. Mr. Brumley is preceded in death by his parents: Ralph and Virginia Broyles Brumley, his paternal grandparents, Charles Ross and Iva Belle Cobb Brumley, his maternal grandparents, Perry and Clara Davis Broyles, a brother-in-law: Jackie Robert Cobble. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 pm Friday at GreeneLawn Memory Gardens with Rev. Joey Tillery officiating. The Greene County Honor Guard will convey military honors. Friends and family are asked to meet at the funeral home at 2:00 pm on Friday to go in procession to the graveside service. The family will receive friends from 5-8 pm Thursday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home. Active pallbearers will be Jeff Idell, Ricky Cobble, Mike Cobble, Joshua Idell, Jordan Idell and Frank Coakley.
