Gene Carter

June 18, 1930 - March 15, 2022

Robert Eugene "Shortneck" Carter, 91, passed away Tuesday morning at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born on June 18, 1930, a son of the late Bart and Nora Carter of the Mount Carmel Community. He was well known and well-loved in the Mosheim Community. He was a member and trustee of Brown Springs Baptist Church in Mosheim. He was married to his life-long companion, Phyllis Carter, for 72 wonderful years. They were married on February 7th, 1950. They taught everyone around them what the definition of true love meant. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law: Susan and Mark Compton, Sherry and Al Hodges; one granddaughter: Whitney Compton-Holt and her husband, Cody Holt; one great-granddaughter: Sophia; brother: Edmond Carter; sister: Emily Swecker; and a special friend, Gene Hensley. He was preceded in death by his sister, Irma Hardin; his brother, Norman Carter; and his parents: Nora and Bart Carter. Mr. Carter will be especially remembered for his sense of humor, love for craftsmanship, summer gardening, music, hunting, ham biscuits, and talking to friends at Critters Corner. He was known for his hard work and local business, Mosheim Heating & Air. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, March 18th 2022 from 1 – 2 PM at Brown Springs Baptist Church in Mosheim, followed by a funeral service at 2 PM. The Rev. Richard Long will officiate. There will be a graveside service in Brown Springs Cemetery afterwards for those who would like to attend. Pallbearers will be Cody Holt, Jaylynn Kesterson, David Kirk, Tony Kirk, and honorary pallbearer Gene Hensley. In lieu of flowers, memorials gifts may be given to Brown Springs Church in Mosheim. Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
