Kerman “Bill” O’Dell Hager Jr., age 76, of Oakwood, Virginia died Thursday, June 9, 2022 at Durham-Hensley Nursing Home. Mr. Hager entered Naval service in April 1963. He served on the staff of the Commander, Destroyer Squadron “Twelve”, at commands in Vietnam, Florida, and Maryland, and aboard frigate “USS Vogue” (FF-1047) and multi-purpose aircraft carrier “USS Saratoga” (CV60) before reporting to Naval Military Personel Command (NMPS) in 1980, retiring in 1982. Among his other awards and decorations, are the Navy Acheivement Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Navy Unit Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Ribbon (with Silver Star), the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Vietnam Service Medal. He enjoyed watching football and basketball, especially the Cleveland Browns and the Lady Vols. He enjoyed traveling and activities with his family. Mr. Hager is survived by his wife of over 40 wonderful years: Donna White Hager; a brother: Terry and Margaret Hager; two sisters: Sandra and Sonny Riggsby and Carole Mathews; three sisters-in-law: Barbara Carter, Sharon Cochran, Lula Belle and Claude Tunnell, and Deborah Hager; two nephews: Jerry Hager and Chris Cochran; three nieces: Stephanie Riggsby, Kim and Billy Boswell, Terri Earley, and Lori and Rick Fannon; several great nieces and great nephews; a special friend: Karen Vanderlinden, Rowdy Sparks, Anthony Mounts, and Sherry McClanahan; his beloved cat: Topaz. Mr. Hager is preceded in death by his parents: Kerman O’Dell and Estella Dodd Hager Sr.; two brothers: Jerry Thomas Hager and Ricky Joe Hager; a nephew: Scott Riggsby; mother-in-law and father-in-law: Joseph Arlie and Hazel Dell Jackson White; and a brother-in-law: Edwin Carter. Graveside services will be 12:00 pm Saturday, June 18, 2022 at Union Temple Cemetery. Rev. Ray Amos will be officiating. Everyone is asked to meet at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home by no later than 11:00 am to go in procession. Pallbearers will include: Gibson Boswell, Chris Cochran, Tanner Earley, Tyler Earley, Bob Grubbs, Jerry Hager, David Jackson, and Matthew Westmorland.
